WARRIOR HEART: He is my shield

The psalmist, most likely King David, presents a vivid description of his most powerful weapon in battle, God the Eternal. Resources indicate that David was between 15 and 17 years old when he fought Goliath. He spent most of the years between then, and his ascension to the throne, at age thirty, running from and battling King Saul. Saul had gone from being David’s mentor to his adversary.

In addition to ongoing military attacks, can you imagine the anguish David felt from Saul’s extreme role reversal, Dear Reader? Perhaps it’s no wonder that David describes God not only in terms of physical combat provision, but also mental and emotional support. He speaks of “unfailing love,” “tower of strength,” and “shield of protection.”

Have you ever been betrayed by someone close to you, Dear Reader? It can be as devastating as a body blow. Thankfully, we can be comforted in times of disappointment in others by knowing, now as then, God stands at the ready to strengthen and defend. We can say with King David, “He is my shield of protection.”
