I’ve had a few students who were experts at “word calling.” They could quickly, correctly read any text aloud on their first tries. Sadly, when quizzed over content, they were frequently clueless, and okay with simply having called words in record time.

Then there were the ones who painstakingly labored over nearly every syllable. Over and over they would return to a word or phrase, until . . . almost in a flash it sounded right, it made sense. and a flower instantaneously bloomed in their minds’ gardens.
